T. spachianus is a popuilar cactus throughout the world. Not only for it’s ornamental applications, but for religious, ritualistic and tribal applications. Natives would cut the cacti and boil it in a large cauldron, over an open fire. They would then dispose of the plant material and fill personal sized cups and pass it around to the tribes people. They would then drink this extract and begin a spiritual journey that would last for hours. Some have said they see their long lost relatives, others state they had visions of the future, while others had a spiritual encounter. Two known active alkaloids in this species is mescalin and hordenine.
